Welcome back to Sand Lapper! I’m glad to have you back here for another stirring discussion about South Carolina! Every place in the world generally has notable people to have sprung from it. For today’s discussion, I wanted to place a spotlight on three particular people which found their roots in this wonderful Palmetto state.
The ever famous James Joseph Brown! He is often hailed to be the originator of Soul music and funk. He has gone on to break records, top charts all over the world. What a lot of people may not know about his is the fact that he was born to a teen mom in Barnwell—right here in South Carolina.
As the stories go, he was born in a rather small shack that was made out of wood. Not exactly dignified but this only added to his character as a whole, don’t you think?

Anyone who is an avid fan of entertainment wrestling will automatically know who this person is. More famously known by his wrestling name: The Big Show! He dominated the early 90’s and 2000’s with his big build and heavy hand.
He has also been credited for his gentle personality and his wisdom that helped a lot the newer generation of young wrestling superstars like Paige, Natalya, and Roman Reigns. What a lot of people don’t know is that he was born in Aiken and held a lot of odd jobs before he made it big in the wrestling world.
Many know of this name because he is the 7th president of the United States of America. He came from rather humble beginnings and went on to become one of the most powerful men in America. He was born in Waxhaws and went on to serve in the military.
And that’s that! The three people I discussed have all played massive parts in forwarding cultural progression in their respective fields. They all truly deserve our respect and our veneration. They certainly have made their home towns particularly proud.
What other notable persons do you know hail from South Carolina?
